History of West Side
Back before Colorado Springs was even a city, the west side was an important part of the people's lives that lived here. The Cheyenne, Ute, and Arapaho tribes all worshiped at the base of Pikes Peak in what is now Garden of the Gods. The Spanish and French Flags flew over the area until Thomas Jefferson completed the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. As people began to come to Colorado Springs, they came for gold. It became known as the city of millionaires thanks to the successful gold rushes at Cripple Creek and Pikes Peak. This led to a large amount of money being put into the city. The Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes all used the west side of the city and Pikes Peak as places of worship. This area is a very spiritual area, and it is easy to tell why they used it to worship. The Ute called Pikes Peak "Ta¬Wa¬Ah¬Gath" which means "Sun Mountain Sitting Big". They called it that based on the way the sun would reflect off of the snow-capped mountain.
