Cheyenne Cañon
History of Broadmoor and Cheyenne Cañon
The Broadmoor Hotel was originally a casino back in the 1800s. In 1897, the casino burned down, and it was instead turned into a luxury resort. In 1918, the Broadmoor resort was officially opened. In 1947, two additional wings were completed, adding more rooms to the hotel. As time has gone on, more of the area around the Broadmoor has been donated or sold to the property, adding to the history of the area. In 1959, a ski resort was made for the hotel, and one year later in 1960, the Broadmoor earned its first 5-star rating. In 1961, the south tower was completed, adding more space. In 1988, Edward Gaylord purchased the hotel, and he also owns the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and all Gaylord Hotels. The golf course was redesigned in 2003, and has since hosted the US Women's Open and the Senior US Open. The main building has been renovated since the turn of the century, as well as the South Tower. In 2011, the Anschutz Corporation of Denver purchased the Broadmoor, and new buildings and amenities continued to be developed. Seven Falls reopened in 2015, as well as a complete redesign of Broadmoor West. The Broadmoor continues to renovate, expand, and reimagine luxury hotels. The campus is beautiful and is home to some of the best golf, dining, and hotel experiences in the world.
Cheyenne Cañon was purchased from the city of Colorado Springs by the citizens in 1885. Later, William Jackson Palmer, Colorado Springs' founder, donated 480 acres of the upper part of the cañon. The part that was donated by Palmer included Helen Hunt Falls, Silver Cascade Falls, and "High Drive" which leads to Bear Creek Regional Park. In 1909, the Park Commission said of the park that it is"by far the grandest and most popular of all the beautiful cañons near the city". The Park opened the Starsmore Discovery Center in 1992. The center has nature exhibits, a climbing wall, and much more. Throughout the park, beautiful rock walls and bridges can be seen. These features of the park were built as far back as 1914. The Park is full of history and beauty. To honor the Hispanic heritage of the area, the name of the Cañon is spelled with a tilde over the n, instead of the traditional "canyon" spelling. Cañon is the spelling that honors the people who were living in the area before we were all here.
